A top Democrat told high school students gathered at the U.S. Capitol Thursday that climate change caused Hurricane Katrina and the conflict in Darfur, which led to the “black hawk down” battle between U.S. troops and Somali rebels.
Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass.), chairman of the House (Select) Energy Independence and Global Warming Committee, also equated the drive for global warming legislation with the drive for women’s suffrage in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
But one global warming expert from the conservative Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) told Cybercast News Service that such a remark reveals Markey’s ignorance on the subject of global warming.

It may not be the most profound effect of global warming, but it could be the most painful: Climate change could bring a sharp increase in cases of kidney stones in Illinois and other Midwestern states, according to a new study.
Linking climate change to kidney stones seems odd, but it’s based on the solid medical finding that people in warm regions develop the condition at increased rates. Sweating in warm weather removes fluid from the body and increases the salt concentration in urine, which can spur the growth of kidney stones.
By the year 2050, the new report estimates that a large chunk of Illinois will fall within America’s “kidney-stone belt,” which currently includes only Southern states. The Chicago area alone would see up to 100,000 extra cases each year, according to the report published Monday in a widely respected journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

I’m not sure if John Brignell has these latest consequences of global warming on his ‘warm list’ – A complete list of things caused by global warming.
Global Warming – the cause of everything and every weather event is ‘consistent‘ with climate models.

Hell that’s why I get kidney stones. All this time I thought it only shrinks the brains of the faithful.
Ian Mott says
As my doctor advised me when I had kidney stones, “the solution is beer, if you don’t drink, you don’t piss, and if you don’t piss, you die”. I now confront death more often and more willingly, with weapon of choice in one hand, and instrument of deliverance in the other.

What makes me wonder about this story is why has Allianz, one of the largest financial services companies in the world decided to team up with WWF. Is it just so that these kids are given an opportunity to learn more about climate change, including how the Southeastern U.S. is particularly vulnerable to climate change, and how it is affecting their lives.
You can find out more about alliance between the finance sector and WWF, the learning curriculum and even take a test at http://www.worldwildlife.org/climate/curriculum/item5944.html
Sid Reynolds says
Most timely; we have a renewal notice from Allianz on a policy, and will now chance Insurance company, and tell them why.
No way will we deal with a company that is allied with the WWF; or any other fundamentalist eco terrorist group for that matter.

I live in the southern U.S., aka both “the Bible Belt” and “the kidney stone belt.” Now, I’m confused as to whether I keep getting kidney stones because I don’t partake of the devil’s brew or because it’s too hot.
Malcolm Hill says
This whole business of attribution of GW has always bemused me because it is no different to the way people read their stars in the paper and are convinced that they are very good predictors.
Of course what happens, people find the situation in their lives that fits with their stars and, voila, it must be true. The warmanistas do the same thing.
Equally if one goes around the world looking for examples of where evidence of GW is absent,it is just as easy, despite what the CSIRO /BOM cronies say.
I wanted to apply for a $5m grant to show this, but was told, under no circumstances.
Therein lies the rub.
Ian Mott says
Option 3, Woody, “all of the above”.
I agree, Sid, I have a policy with them too and will soon fix that. One must take one’s pleasures as they come to us.

Any scientist interested in gaining funding for his or her project is best advised to assert that the project is involved in an “urgent effort to save the Earth from the looming catastrophe of global warming.”
Thing is, that works very well, if you’re a grant-writer. Trouble is, when the money comes in, it’s added to the billion$$ stockpile earmarked for “global warming prevention”, when the point of the research is actually quite more relevant to something relevant.
The other trouble is, the scientist taking the money must “sign on” to the global warming hoax.
When it’s raining money, the penurious upend their hats.
If it wasn’t so difficult to get funding for research, lots of scientists wouldn’t have to pander to junk science to do good work.
