Following the very sad and sudden death of our 12 year old Border Collie, we only managed two weeks without ‘man’s best friend’ before heading off to the Border Collie Trust kennels to look at homeless Collies/Collie crosses. So, on Sunday 29th June we completed all the paperwork and came home with very docile/nervous 18 month old Border Collie/Saluki cross who had been rescued from Ireland. A working dog crossed with a sighthound is known as a Lurcher.
We’ve renamed him ‘Shadow’ because he follows us around to the point where we are in danger of tripping over him! He’s never been trained and seems to have been abused in the past, so there is much work for us to do, but he is settling in well with us.

Life without a dog is miserable. When my basset died I got a poodle like Shadow, that is a bit nervous and worried. I think he was terrified of ending up in the pound again. In the year we’ve had him, he’s come out his shell and is as happy and secure as anyone could hope.

With a dog that’s been abused, you’ll have to do a lot of work to overcome his past. Having to trip over him is a good sign. Shower the dog with love and encouragement, be a friend, and all will be well.
Not right away, though. And don’t worry about training, too much. Be attentive and you’ll work out mutual understandings and vocabularies.
A house without a dog is not a home.

Best of luck with your dog, Paul. Once he has bonded and trusts you, he will want to please. Each dog has a different nature. I have two sheep dogs. One, a collie, pedigreed and expensive. By the time we knew he was useless with sheep he had made of himself an amiable, indispensible children’s pet. The other, a kelpie (freebie) is a good working dog, but also an unprincipled scavenger with a dash of rat cunning, determined to share in all the pet privileges of his companion. Wouldn’t be without them.
