    Jennifer,

It looks like Charlotte Ramotswe has been mislead by the Washington Times Article.

The article says in its first paragraph, “rich countries must shrink their economies to address climate change” and further down in the article, “s the developed world must reduce consumption and commit to binding and punitive limits on greenhouse gas emissions”, Stephen Dinan, Obama climate czar has socialist ties, The washington Times, 12th January, 2009, http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/jan/12/obama-climate-czar-has-socialist-ties/, viewed 13th January, 2009.

However I can’t find any thing that uses the words punitive instead this is what i got from the commissions webpages:

“If we are responsible for the future of our planet, we should think of decreasing current consumption levels in developed countries and refraining from superfluous over-consumption.”and

“How to achieve that goal, and how to get there in ways that promote economic expansion and opportunity in order to sustain growing populations without undermining economic growth, is crucial to ensuring a decent life for coming generations”.Commission for a Sustainable World Society,St Petersburg Climate Change Seminar of the SI Commission for a Sustainable World Society, 14-15 July 2008, http://www.socialistinternational.org/viewArticle.cfm?ArticlePageID=1275, viewed 13th January, 2009.

The above is hardly calling for violent overthrow of the existing order, no matter how paranoid one might be.

As the Obama transition team points out in the article Gordon Brown is a member of the Socialist international and he is hardly one for state ownership of production (and his brother does PR for the nuclear industry in the UK).

But I have a question. The article says Carol Browner was a commissioner on the sustainability commission. However when I looked at the webpage all the commissioners were government ministers or equivalent e.g. Hilary Benn, the UK government’s minsiter for international development and formely the environment minister. So was she a commissioner when she wasn’t of ministerial rank, or was she an adviser etc? I think I need more data

Anyway it seems she is letting go any roles that could cause conflicts with her new role, a bit like Dick Cheney did when he resigned as CEO of that marvelously upright business concernHalliburton to take up a formal role with the Bush administration..

Lets hope this article doesn’t start up one of those silly blogosphere merry-go-rounds.

    Sorry my mistake,

Hilary Benn is environment minister in the UK government where prviously he was minister for international development. I got it back-to-front. BTW his dad, ‘Tony’ is a socialist of the old school…..

Old school, new school and stll the same philosophy – the misguided belief that the economy is a phsyical thing which can be planned by government decree.

AGW is the lastest ploy to establish central planning, this time in the UN via the IPCC.
