That Sink-ing Feeling

October 23, 2007 By jennifer

This week’s climate doom and gloom story comes from the unsurprising source of the University of East Anglia, reported in an unsurprising place – the BBC website:

Oceans are ‘soaking up less CO2’

The amount of carbon dioxide being absorbed by the world’s oceans has reduced, scientists have said.

Results of their 10-year study in the North Atlantic show CO2 uptake halved between the mid-90s and 2000 to 2005.

The unusually restrained BBC Environment Analyst Roger Harrabin did however point out that it isn’t known whether this is due to climate change or natural variations.

RealClimate’s William ‘Stoat’ Connelley points out on his blog that the airbourne fraction of CO2 is still about 55%, so this can’t be happening globally.

There’s more, because on 17th May the BBC reported Polar ocean ‘soaking up less CO2’

One of Earth’s most important natural absorbers of carbon dioxide is failing to soak up as much of the greenhouse gas as it was expected to, experts say.

The decline of Antarctica’s Southern Ocean carbon “sink” – or reservoir – means that atmospheric CO2 levels may be higher in future than predicted.

Similar story, same libarary photograph of floating ice, with the addition of a mention of the other favourite – ocean ‘acidification.’

Paul couldn’t help himelf to negatively spin it – must not let any confirming story pass the portals. ARGH !!!!!

Interesting thing denial though – all those gigatons of CO2 sunk and we would expect no change in ocean pH ? hmmmmm Headline: “Belief defeats laws of chemistry – science gobsmacked”.

Sure, but if ain’t sinkin’ anymore………

Just another factor on the extremely long list of poorly understood variables which have a fundamental effect on climate. These variables and the measurement error involved with each, means the whole concept of anthropogenic climate change remains highly speculative.

Geez MAGE where have you been? Luke (and little sir echo sjt) know all about all variables in the climate – with absolute certainity.
    OR
do you just skip every time you see one of their posts. If so kudos to you.

Well Lawrie you’re certainly an absolute well of information. Any relation to Rog & Pat?

You don’t fool us, “Luke”, we know the real Luke died yesterday of a combination of Coprolalia and von Munchausen Syndrome. Admit it, you are an oil/tobacco/nuclear/coal company plant, trying to discredit us greens. SJT will confirm this.

I think you must be right Davey.

He gave it all away when he claimed ownership of a GTHO, & then a Torana XU1.
Any genuine green would have chopped their hands off, before typing such blasphemy.

Did I ever say I was a genuine green. You assume a lot Hasbo don’t you.

Anyway I as kidding – it was a Ducati Desmo.

    Plus truck you Davey Jones.

you just keep telling yourself that. Scientists are doing research and coming up with yet more worrying evidence. Pretty well the whole history of science is speculation and research. If that’s not good enough for you, then that’s your problem.
