From Australia’s equivalent of the BBC (not a compliment!):
Climate change as much a concern as terrorism: survey
A major survey has found that an overwhelming majority of Australians believe global warming is at least as serious a threat to the nation as terrorism.
Sydney University’s US Studies Centre has released one of the most comprehensive surveys ever undertaken on Australian attitudes to America.
The survey reports that 76 per cent of people believe global warming is now equal to or more serious a threat than Islamic fundamentalism.
That supports another recent report by the Lowy Institute for International Policy which also found that global warming had become the top concern……………………….

Same media who gave us the hyped up panic over the Y2K bug.
If there’s $ in it,spin it.

‘Scepticism’ over climate claims
The public believes the effects of global warming on the climate are not as bad as politicians and scientists claim, a poll has suggested.
The Ipsos Mori poll of 2,032 adults – interviewed between 14 and 20 June – found 56% believed scientists were still questioning climate change.
There was a feeling the problem was exaggerated to make money, it found.
The Royal Society said most climate scientists believed humans were having an “unprecedented” effect on climate.
The survey suggested that terrorism, graffiti, crime and dog mess were all of more concern than climate change.

Man causing climate change – poll
Large majorities in many countries now believe human activity is causing global warming, a BBC World Service poll suggests.
A sizeable majority of people agreed that major steps needed to be taken soon to address global warming.
More than 22,000 people were surveyed in 21 countries and the results show a great deal of agreement on the issue.
The survey is published a day after 150 countries met at the United Nations to discuss climate change.

mobs of sheep there too Paul?
SJT says
As Luke said, Y2K didn’t happen because the problem was addressed. Some people did panic, but some government assurance that it had in fact been addressed and not ignored would have been a good idea.
If we address the issue of CO2 from fossil fuels, there won’t be a problem, either. It was a nice feeling when everything was OK that night, wasn’t it?
Paul Biggs says
I wonder how climate change has been presented to BBC World Service listeners?
I think it is becoming clear that the perceived ‘problem’ of CO2 won’t be addressed.
Jayne says
The Y2K “problem” wasn’t as big a problem as the media spun it.
Throwing people into a panic when ,yes,it was being dealt with, achieved nothing but big $ for some companies.
Explain to me how O.H & S can seriously demand old evaporative fans in a nursing home needed to be tested as Y2K efficient?
Or the electric doors?
Evaporative fans in showers and above stoves?
TV’s?
AND their remotes???
Finding “Y2K tested” stickers all over the old standard Telecom-issued handsets was good for a giggle,I must admit.
None of the above were linked in any shape or form to a computer, none of them had a computer chip inside them but our nursing budget was slashed to cover the $40,000 in costs these Y2K “experts” had charged.
Chaos did happen after they tried running a nursing home with fewer staff than was legislated, with several serious accidents and one death.
The constant media hype stirring up unnecessary panic about climate change got old back in the day of the dinosaurs.
Luke says
Well whose fault is that ? If management stood by and watch that happened they should be sacked. In our Y2K audits the first thing that was done was inventory all systems that might be affected and those that WERE NOT.
So you’re saying “hey we all watched consultants blatantly rip us off and we said nothing”. Come on?
SJT says
Jayne
there were scams going on about Y2K, that’s poor management. The computer code where I worked at had to be fixed, or no product would have been going out the door. It’s not my fault that there are scammers out there, but I did my job, and the systems I worked on continued to keep the company running.
The science from the IPCC is not a scam.
Davey Gam Esq. says
Of course Australians now believe that climate change is more important than terrorism. This simply reflects the recent emphasis given to climate change by the news media and politicians. All those cooling towers giving off dangerous water vapour.
A few years ago, every news bulletin had something about terrorism and Muslims. There were more minarets, prayer mats, and devout Muslim bottoms on TV than I could count. A survey then would have put terrorism at the top of the list.
When the non-problem of Y2K was in fashion, it would have been top of the list.
Perhaps readers would like to suggest the next media obsession? Mega-bushfires? When the news comes on, I now usually turn it off and listen to Beethoven.
Luke says
Or Davey maybe it’s a reaction to 6 years of drought, hurricane Katrina, the Artic melting, and so on. Eventually people think gee maybe things are changing. Now whether that’s a natural variation or climate change we could and do debate – but gee there has been a fair bit of real climate chaos reported?! First hurricane in the South Atlantic and other weird things.
Frankly most people thought Y2K was a wank. The fact that nothing happened is more a tribute to fixing the code in time. And yep some people ripped off the system perhaps.
And we have our “War on Science” national Australian newspaper and people like Andrew Bolt going full tilt. Would have thought most people would know there’s a big row on about the issue. Howard vs Rudd etc.
People say thye’re “concerned” about climate change but are they really? Up to a point – but are they “really” concerned.
SJT says
Davey
without work on Y2K, a lot of companies would have gone bust. The worries about industrial control equipment were mostly blown out of proportion, because most of that has no idea what time or date it is anyway, it’s just going through an endless cycle. As for lights and fans, that’s just a ripoff.
As it was, a lot of companies just took the opportunity to throw out old rubbish, and upgrade to more modern products. A lot of software is bought pre-packaged anyway, so companies only had to rely on the vendor to make it compliant, and left the hard work up to the vendor.
The fact is, without Y2K compliance, a lot of businesses would have not been able to do business.
Sensible people just did what they are doing now. They evaulated the risks, and acted appropriately. If you want to compare this to the Y2K scare, it’s actually a very good analogy. If you respond approriately to a scare, you will usually come out of it in pretty good shape. If you ignore it, the odds are you won’t.
So what do you want to do Davey? Look at the evidence, and act pro-actively, so that there is no problem, and everyone wonders what the fuss is all about, or do you want to say that there’s nothing to worry about, and accept the consequences?
Jazza says
Maybe they are aware of the degree of editing out adverse to their agenda opinions and scientific findings, but are obsessed with AGW!
Ive seen it happen before, that public opinion is shaped and built, try the unscientific approach that all of any single breed of dog can be dangerous!
As bogus as the perspective that “consensus exists in science that AGW means we are all doomed immediately unless..”

LMAO Luke and SJT(please note, that’s cynical laughter).
Of course we all said something,to many nursing authorities, unions, etc but what can you expect when the nursing home is owned and run by a local govt that is a master in the art of the cover-up?
My point is over-kill on Y2K was far more costly than just running a systems check on equipment.
And the same thing will ultimately occur with all climate change hype.
Davey – I claim the next media obsession will be in reading cloud formations and how any scientist should be able to predict the Dow Jones Index by the shape of clouds at sunset.
Personally I prefer “Poisoning Pigeons in The Park” to Beethoven 🙂
Davey Gam Esq. says
Jayne,
You may be right. Long ago (1606) Shakespeare suggested that clouds might look like bears, although he overlooked bulls.
“Sometimes we see a cloud that’s dragonish;
A vapour sometime like a bear or lion…”
Anthony & Cleopatra Act 4, scene 12, line 2
Then again, he may have been watching ABC TV, and became mesmerised by all those power station cooling towers giving off toxic, carcinogenic, teratogenic, radioactive, evil, naughty, global warming steam.

Weeeelll Jayney poo – actually there was theory that you predict the Australian economy on the value of the US dollar and Southern Oscillation Index. Fair correlations DAVEY !!

Someone needs to replicate this poll in the United Arab Emirates. Do *they* consider global warming on a par with terrorism?
Polling cozy urbanites in prosperous economies isn’t a completely honest exercise.
