Surface-based Temperature Records
THE warmaholics are fond of using the phrase “official records going back to 1850″, but the simple facts are that prior to the 1970s, surface-based temperatures from a few indiscriminate, mostly backyard locations in Europe and the US are fatally corrupted and not in any sense a real record.  Read more here. Crazy Claims from Climate Scientist
This is absured, but true: Australia’s use of coal and carbon emissions policies are guaranteeing the “destruction of much of the life on the planet”, a leading NASA scientist has written in a letter to Barack Obama.  Read more here. (4)

Learning by Candlelight
As I waited night after night for the electricity to return, candlelight kept teaching me about moving air’s talent for removing heat, hampering any effort to keep warmth “down here” by constantly sending it up and away.   Read more here. (0)

People Powered Gym
A US gym has installed specially-adapted exercise bikes that recycle energy generated by people as they work out.   Read more here. (0)

Whale Meat as a Western Taboo

It’s free-range, organic and tastes like an exceptionally tender eye fillet.  I am referring to the whale meat, lightly roasted in black pepper, I enjoyed Tuesday night in Tokyo.

The Japanese delegates at the conference I am attending here in Tokyo thought it unusual I was keen to try whale.

“Its taboo for Westerners,” was [...]

Fishers Snagged: Not Farmed, Then Not Organic

According to an article in yesterday’s New York Times the market for organic foods continues to grow with sales reaching US$13.8 billion in 2005 compared with US$3.6 billion in 1997.
But there’s not much ‘organic seafood’ about because of problems with definitions and also what fish eat.
Now I would have thought a wild Atlantic salmon would [...]

A New Year’s Resolution: No More Organic Food

Joe Fattorini writes in The (Glasgow)Herald about his new year’s resolution which is to give up eating organic food:
It’s self-indulgent, wasteful and frankly immoral. But you know how it is. I was swept along with the trend, and it felt good at the time. But I don’t want to be a hypocrite. So I’m giving [...]

Talking Up Chuck Benbrook To Talk Down GM

Imagine meeting a person who was once a top advisor to American Presidents Jimmy Carter, George Bush Senior and also Bill Clinton! He would have to have been rather special to have survived both sides of politics for that long as a top advisor.
According to Michael Thomson writing in The Land this week (pg [...]

When in Drought, Grow Organic

My friend Dr David Tribe from Melbourne University has just started his own blog, click here. Congratulations David!
I was scrolling through his recent posts and there is a great paper on organic farming, download file. Well it provides good quantitative comparative data on yields, nitrogen inputs, and nitrogen leaching for conventional and organic [...]

Some Real Data on Organics Please

I have been repeatedly referred to the ‘New Farm’ website as a source of quality information on organic farming systems.
But I can’t find any actual data at this site and my request for specific data seems to have just got me receiving their newsletter.
I note the site says:
One of the key features of the FST [...]

Organic Food Crisis - Problems with Paper Trail

According to the Britian’s Observer newspaper:
Britain’s organic food revolution was facing its first serious test last night after an Observer investigation revealed disturbing levels of fraud within the industry.
Farmers, retailers and food inspectors have disclosed a catalogue of malpractice, including producers falsely passing off food as organic and retailers failing to gain accreditation from independent [...]

Organics Use Less Energy?

My recent writings on GM food crops, including in The Land newspaper last Thursday, have resulted in some emails suggesting that I am wrong and that organics, rather than GM, really are the answer.
I received an email with a link to a paper titled ‘Organic farming stands the test of time’ by David Suzuki published [...]
