GEORGE Brandis says it is “deplorable” deniers are being excluded from the climate change debate and people who say the science is settled are ignorant and medieval.
The attorney general called the leader of the opposition in the Senate, Penny Wong, the “high priestess of political correctness” and said he did not regret his comment that everyone has the right to be a bigot in an interview with the online magazine Spiked.
He said one of the main motivators for his passionate defence of free speech has been the “deplorable” way climate change has been debated and he was “really shocked by the sheer authoritarianism of those who would have excluded from the debate the point of view of people who were climate-change deniers”.
“One side [has] the orthodoxy on its side and delegitimises the views of those who disagree, rather than engaging with them intellectually and showing them why they are wrong,” he said…
“The moment you establish the state as the arbiter of what might be said, you establish the state as the arbiter of what might be thought, and you are right in the territory that George Orwell foreshadowed.”
And I’m quoting from Bridie Jabour writing in the The Guardian!

Yes.
The State , as in minor , NSW, has ridden roughshod over anything it feels like , in the name of conservation. While doing this the officers of the State have made themselves millions in backhanders and future jobs. How did Carr get to be a consultant for the forestry company who cleared Red Hill ? SHORT MEMORY. And the ABC. All the “conservation parks” will be exploited. Watch this space.
I have said it before , read Ben Elton’s ‘This other Eden’
The MONEY is in conservation. Conserving anything is not what the instigators actually want.
Money is.

You must have been in the bathroom when they had the debate. Or maybe you were taking out the garbage. Or you blinked.
When collectivists of the New Class demand a debate, rest assured that the debate is over. When they advocate a free market, rest assured that their “market” is as free as Mother Russia. And when it all turns to waste and mess, you can be sure it was someone else’s money and land and resources they sent down the toilet.
Neville says
A new study has found that glacier retreat has decelerated after 1950. Exactly the opposite to so called CAGW.

So now it’s time for the current government to start highlighting some of the skeptics views. Use the bully pulpit to quash this notion that mankind controls the climate. For me, the ultimate cherry-pick is treating “climate” as something which began in 1980 and will range into the next few centuries. About the period 1980-2014 our cherry pickers tend to be dogmatic but a bit confused, uncertain and can even be downright ignorant; as for the period after 2014, their knowledge and certainty are absolute.

I wonder, when I read the sycophantic wikipedia page on Carr and the lauding of his saving of the Pilliga, whether Santos has embarrassed he and his mates, with their urgency to exploit.
Or have they become cheeky enough to believe nobody will notice

Brandis may well champion intellectual engagement with denialists but why would you bother when they go to great lengths to avoid doing even a minimum of research on the tired old recycled delusions they keep sprouting to support their beliefs. The top 100 denialists scams have all been rebutted.
Ian Thomson says
Hi Bazza,
And the hundred are?
Don’t you find it a little worrying that, given the fact we still should be warming, ( ever so slowly), from the last ice age, the planet is cooling lately.
I realise that heat causes cold in your religion, ( “extreme weather events” ), but how cold must it get before it stops warming ? How much more polar ice will make it stop cooling from the heat ?
No amount of record fiddling , or science is settled arrogance, can alter written accounts of extremes of heat and cold in the last 1000 years. No scientist with a computer and an agenda can unfreeze the frozen LIA Thames , or undo the strong evidence of the Chinese poking around the polar regions in the 1400s, ( nor the Vikings earlier ).
No matter how much Jones and Hansen want it erased from history.
bazza says
I rest my case

Lefties only demand a debate when they are not on top. When they do get in charge, they declare the debate over and seek to at the least marginalize those who dare resist.
And of course, as we see in the USA, they do not merely stop at marginalization, but use IRS, EPA, BLM, FBI, NSA to monitor, intrude, harass, disrupt, etc. And of course with interlocking relationships between govt. and media, we can count on media either ignoring the skeptics/dissidents or misrepresenting them.
Australia is setting a great example of true liberalism in the classic, society building sense of the word. And showing people how to reject the illiberal oligarchy that modern lefties seem to flock to.

You can rest your case, sort of like the good Capt. Queeg rested his case.

Bazza I would be fascinated to see that list of denialist scams or even perhaps the top ten would do. And what case do you think you’re resting?
Your sides fraud and con is so easily understood and so obvious you’d have to be a religious fanatic to ignore it.

Bazza has apparently resorted to using pop sound bites.
I guess it’s a nice change from the ‘record breaking’ sport sound bites.
Do all those top 100 deny the same thing and if so. . .what is being specifically denied?
Robert says
I think it was the top 97 denialist scams which got rebutted while we were in the bathroom. Bazza, nobody believes 100 for some reason. 97 is the golden number, whether you’re talking percentages or dollars. It’s close enough to 100 for convincing the punters, but adds a touch of realism. Learn from the greats like Lew and Cookie!

George Brandis should be commended for championing the cause of climate change sceptics, and deriding the climate change warmists for their essentially evil propagandising. Sadly, there are many of the latter in the Coalition — Greg Hunt falls into that category.
It is high time that Greg Hunt woke up to the fact that Labor lost government — not that the Coalition won because of its direct action policy.
It is a matter of fact that there is no scientific or economic justification for spending any money on ‘direct action’. Clive Palmer should be commended for voicing his opposition to direct action. He may turn out to be the hero that forces the Coalition to water down, if not drop, implementation of direct action.

“WRT Emma Alberici’s interview of Maurice Newman last night on lateline could you please bring to her attention this new scientific paper from the Journal of Atmospheric Sciences by Timothy W Cronin.
http://journals.ametsoc.org/doi/abs/10.1175/JAS-D-13-0392.1?af=R&
She was critical of Newman’s quoting of Roy Spencer’s critique of the IPCC models being 95% wrong and claimed that others claimed that it was Spencer who was wrong.
As noted by Dr. Roy Spencer, a change in planetary albedo of only 1-2% alone can account for global warming or global cooling, but this paper finds climate model planetary albedo may be biased as much as 6% due to errors of the solar zenith angle alone!
This totally supports Maurice Newman’s claim as to how and why the IPCC models are 95% wrong.
It would be appreciated by all if the ABC generally could be a little more sceptical about the “settled” warming science when even the IPCC are unable to produce any quantification of the degree to which humans are responsible.

Ian I think bazza and Luke desk are probably trying to concoct a list at the moment. I’d like to see it and even a tenth of bazza’s claimed 100 would do. But don’t hold your breath.
The Bolter has made some good points in todays column about the govt’s direct action plan and Labor’s spending lunacy and co2 tax etc when they were in govt.
I agree that Palmer is correct that DA can’t make a scrap of difference to co2 levels or climate or temp or SLs or glacier advance/retreat or bushfires or the GBR or MDB or polar bears or global sea ice or rainfall or drought or floods or cyclones or etc.
But the trouble is the silly OZ electorate still want something done to “FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE.” On a one to one basis I can ussually convince someone of the folly of such stupidity but to do that accross the electorate is an impossible task. If we have to have a plan then DA is the cheapest way to do nothing, but it still costs a few billion down the gurgler for zero return.
Labor’s mess has already cost jobs and can only be worse if we have to waste endless billions $ to purchase fake, corrupt co2 certificates from the EU every year to accomplish ZIP. Just ask Germany etc who are now building lignite power stns to fix their energy grids.
But the govt certainly has a mandate to get rid of Labor’s lunacy and introduce DA I suppose, although it hurts me to say it.

Yes, I have not read the paper because I seem to recall that there was an earlier study that not only do coral islands keep pace with sea level rise but they also change in shape, not necessarily to any detriment. Given that sea level rise is slow and coral grows in response to its environmental needs, it seems hardly surprising.
Don’t know if I’m hallucinating from a dream or something, but I seem to recall that the Maldives government cabinet had a meeting under the sea to demonstrate their concern at sea level rise. But, then made investments in infrastructure including an airport to boost tourism????

Of course zip change to climate or co2 levels or temp by 2100 or for thousands of years. Just refer to the latest RS and NAS report.
Why doesn’t anybody want to tackle this CAGW mitigation fraud head on? It took Mark Markopolos just five minutes to discover the Madoff ponzi scheme but nobody would listen. You see the numbers just wouldn’t add up. But it would take another 9 years before Madoff was arrested and charged. He is now serving 159 years in prison for his fraud.
This super dooper ponzi mitigation fraud is actually FINANCED and PROMOTED by nearly every major govt on the planet and yet can only deliver a zero return on the investment for thousands of years. Yet everyone dives for cover and won’t even discuss these obviously fraudulent practices. Why is that?
Neville says
This German (and EU?) ponzi scheme fraud is even more idiotic than I imagined. Only the big companies are helped and smaller firms suffer a heavier penalty.

“CHERISH YOUR DOUBTS
Cherish your doubts, for doubt is the attendant of truth.
Doubt is the key to the door of knowledge, it is the servant of discovery.
A belief which may not be questioned binds us to error, for there is incompleteness and imperfection in every belief.
Doubt is the touchstone of truth: it is an acid which eats away the false.
Let no one fear for the truth, that doubt may consume it, for doubt is a testing of belief.
The truth stands boldly and unafraid, it is not shaken by the testing:
For truth, if it be truth, arises from each testing stronger, more secure.
Those that would silence doubt are filled with fear; their houses are built on shifting sands.
But those who fear not doubt, and know its use, are founded on rock.
They shall walk in the light of growing knowledge; the work off their hands shall endure.
Therefore let us not fear doubt, but rejoice in its help:
It is to the wise as a staff to the blind; doubt is the attendant of truth”

(2) Should there be limits on what people can say? In controlled societies the answer is yes, the rulers can decide what can be said and what cannot. In free societies the question is more complex. Can you shout ‘fire’ in a crowded theatre? Well, if the theatre is old and rickety, with lots of combustibles hanging from the ceiling and the band on-stage is setting off fireworks, maybe you bloody well should.
Personally, being a powerless old white male, I find it both intimidating and offensive when I hear harridans slagging my ethnic group on the ABC. Can I seek redress under the Racial Discrimination Act? No, because this act is not for all Australians, it is only for a few pampered groups who have enough control on the media and government of the day to enforce it. This is properly called a tyranny and has nothing to do with fair and equitable treatment under the law.

Good question, sp.
If you banned bigotry you would ban most of the civilised world.
Some of the biggest bigots are those who are currently slandering Brandis, who merely wants to allow them to do it.

I certainly believe in free speech, but everyone should be judged by what they say. Is it bigotry for a muslim leader to call Jews pigs and monkeys or a MSM journo to call for Brendan Nelson to be glassed (a call to glass the c…t) or a union leader’s call for the Qantas chief to be shot in the back of the head or Kathy Jackson to be booed repeatedly and abused for trying to clean up the HSU or a call for Abbott to be decapitated ( performed more than once at recent rallies on dummies)
I think we get the picture, but I would draw the line at any exploitation of children under any circumstances, no ifs no buts.
Neville says
So yes I think that everyone has the right to be a bigot in a free society with the full knowledge that they can be judged by what they say.
I remember the repulsive NAMBLA scum gained some left wing support in the USA for promoting sex with children in their magazines, videos etc. This organisation should be outlawed in my opinion in any reasonable free society.

I called Mick Martyn an ape during the ’96 GF. Didn’t like him shutting down Lockett. When he was drafted to Carlton the coach said they wanted a gorilla at fullback.
It’s okay though. I’m sure Mick will be made Australian of the Year for our deliberate attack on his Anglo-Celtic ancestry. And I’m sure the police will want to interrogate me and Dennis Pagan till the early hours – even if we aren’t thirteen year old schoolgirls.
