THE clothes we wear tell something about us including our likely prejudices. Clothes no doubt also enable others with similar likes and dislikes to find us.
A regular visitor to this blog sent in this cartoon of Keith in costume for the ‘Defining the Greens’ series. The cartoon is titled ‘pigeonholed’ which is apparently a transitive verb that can mean to assign to an often restrictive category.
I am not sure whether Keith is a Green or better defined as a Neopagan.

“Neopaganism or Neo-Paganism is an umbrella term used to identify a wide variety of modern religious movements, particularly those influenced by pre-Christian pagan beliefs of Europe…
“Neopaganism is a postmodern development in the industrialized countries, found in particular strength in the United States and Britain, but also in Continental Europe (German-speaking Europe, Scandinavia, Slavic Europe, Latin Europe and elsewhere). The largest Neopagan movement is Wicca, though other significantly sized Neopagan faiths include Neo-druidism, Germanic Neopaganism, and Slavic Neopaganism…

Ian Mott says
Greens are essentially a 2500 year old intellectual throw-back. They yearn for everyone but themselves to revert to an iron age economy but with 21st century medicine and 21st century communications on call. But it doesn’t work that way because the first people we would need to cut back on would be the least contributive. And that means you and your mates, SJT.

SJT: “This topic makes absolutely no sense whatsoever”.
Which confirms, yet again, the general impression that AGW has been wholly accepted by the gullible in society.
However, as in most matters affecting the state, where does the money lead to – network.nationalpost.com/np/blogs/fpcomment/archive/2009/05/30/lawrence-solomon-enron-s-other-secret.aspx is the start of an interesting series by Lawrence Solomon.

We did it for you little will.
Generally I find this analysis of ‘the’ green mentality or philosophical stance redundant because it’s like defining the ego need of a child which is all vectors and no substance; wilful but imprecise, capricious but persistent, self-indulgent but intolerant, unrestrained but ascetic especially towards others, egalitarian in word but elitist in effect. Ultimately the green reverence for nature produces odd little weird herds like pagans; why anyone would want to worship nature is beyond me but I think it’s time the greens who contribute to this discussion put their money were their mouths are; they should throw off such decadent garb as Keith wears, pick a warm or cold natural environment and subsist for a year uitilising only what they can extract from that ‘natural’ surround; the only bit of human technology they can take is a poster of the Catlin expedition for inspiration.

SJT, Here’s something that makes more sense.
Well…..98% anyway.

Well SJT – nothing like the denialist goons pandering to their own fantasies. And I don’t recommend it without a stiff Scotch first – but if you look at the Mottisian Bushvision series (!?) on Youtube – looks like cardigans might be making a come back.
Camouflage fatigues might be de riguer for the collective meetings but the TV image of the modern greenie on TV is svelte, young and positive. Someone you’d like your daughter to bring home – ” a nice young man” in fact.
e.g. WWF Executive Nick Heath – urbane, cool, makes sense even when he doesn’t, you find it hard to hate him
Or why even dispose with the clothes totally – how about Miranda – getting her gear off for Koalas – no amount of statistical facts from Jen will stop this advanced campaigning. How can Motty come back on that – No please Ian – don’t do it ARGH !!!
http://www.news.com.au/story/0,27574,25564221-2,00.html (personally I only read it for the articles)
But anyway – don’t assume all greenies are wearing sackcloth – I myself like to blog in a little French negligee and fluffy slippers. Why not be comfortable?
Eyrie says
Just swung by the Toowoomba UN Environment Day event. About 60 people and 10 or so shade tents. Fine day. Pathetic really. Maybe the tide is turning.
So the greenies are wearing suits, Luke? First rule of con artists – look properous and credible.
They’re still the enemy.
spangled drongo says
” how about Miranda – getting her gear off for Koalas”
Miranda sez;
“Something like 80 per cent of the koalas’ habitat has been destroyed since Europeans arrived in Australia.”
Even if she doesn’t know, at least she doesn’t blame AGW!
And it’s lovely to know you’re comfortable in that gear, Luke. You should include it in your gravitar.

Gee cohenite they look like some of the ferals at the hansen CC rally in washington recently, how appropriate.
Luke says
Coho – I’m insulted – just because you like to wear women’s clothes doesn’t make you gay. Some of my best friends would be insulted.
And Neville the people in that photo might be very nice people if you got to know them. Certainly the Tories and the Republican party would have already.
Same as wearing fatigues might make you either a weekend paramilitary survivalist hobbyist (aka nutter) (see most of the sceptics here), a greenie or a bushwalker. Or it might just be Motty in the bushes spying on how many lights you have on.
To make sure he doesn’t do this to me – I’ve clear-felled and Tordoned a 500 metre perimeter.
But anyway – on Koalas – Jen’s campaign is washed up. If Miranda starkers says they’re in trouble that’s good enough for me. Who would argue?
And on AGW – if all the Australian sceptics get their gear off – I’ll convert.
Coho – as secretary you organise it. How serious are you lot?
Michael says
Hey cohers,
since you seem to have some spare time on your hands, are you going to pop back to Deltoid and dazzle us with your statistical acumen?
Your homework still awaits.
cohenite says
The question Michael was, if I remember rightly and I do have some shock amnesia from the time I spent with the Deltoid darlings. does the climate shift in 1976 in itself provide all or most of the upward temperature trend for the latter part of the 20thC, if not the 20thC? Is that right? If so, it’s already been done at fig’s 1 & 3 here;

Now go back and invite Nathan and Lee over here so we can continue our amicable chat.

” What do the Greens wear” ? asks Jennifer.
Well, aren’t the PETA people mostly nude????
It might be efficient with drooling middle aged men???
Anyway , in the whaling issue , hardly no one ( whaler) would listen to an old , fat fart like Watson.
Remember Rune from Norway said that hard core Hollywood hot babe Hayden Panettiere was his hero, even if she campaigned against Norwegian whaling.
So Greenpeace badly dressed activists seem not to have an impact , we know also that middle aged women activists / industry people loose their power, old women don’t have a voice , a sad fact , that’s what I have heard , actually very ageist and sexist talk , but I think it is relevant….

Yes Cohers, they’re such a reasonable, factual, scientifically analylitical, ball playing lot at Doltoid.
Why not?
cohenite says
SD, there is a lot of angst at D but Michael does have a genuine point; my old favourite;
http://mclean.ch/climate/Aust_temps_alt_view.pdf
did have some debatable aspects to do with the calculations and the lads quickly picked up my gaffe in saying the pre-1976/GPCS temperature data did have a downward trend overlooking the fact that M&Q used data from 1951 not the whole data from the beginning of the La Nina period in 1942; even so, despite there being a slight upward trend from 1951 -1975 [the year before the GPCS], the average temperature for this period is -0.194C below the anomaly base period of 1961-1990; the average temperature from 1981 – 2005 is +0.315C above the base period average; the average in the period between 1976 – 1980, the period of the GPCS, is 29.2C above the base period average; accusations of cherry picking and the artificiality of using seperate regressions for the pre and post GPCS period were levied; a Chow Test needs to be done;
http://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/strucchange/index.html
But I’ll need some assistance to do that so the vultures are having some fun at my ineptitude not appreciating that their argument is predicated on the incredible assumption that there is no climatic effect from the climate shift between La Nina and El Nino.
Ann Novek says
I think it is important for the environmental activists to be well dressed. Nobody would listen to a ragbag, that’s a fact.
Once upon a time , a single sex symbol , like Brigitte Bardot could single handedly end sealing and have a voice in politics. Now there’s an endless stream of BB wannabees , but it’s difficult to compare those activists with BB…
Ann Novek says
Jennifer asks if he is a Green or neopagan.
Isn’t pagan opposite to a believer in a Christian god???
This must really be a pagan site as I understand most people here are not Christians???
Personally I light a candle and pray to God everyday , thanking him for everything wonderful in my life!
spangled drongo says
Cohers, that huge climate shift of ’76 from la nina to el nino plus whatever else it was, was an incredible sea change in so many ways. As an amateur yacht racer and designer I managed to come to grips with the bottom line ahead of my competitors by guessing the right trade-offs.
As a result I enjoyed a few wins in international comp around the Pacific.
Those old weather patterns of over 30 years ago still have not returned. They didn’t change gradually, it happened almost overnight!
It was a step, not a change.

Michael and others,
This post is an opportunity for discussion of fashion – not numbers. Please get back on topic – or go back to Deltoid.
cohenite says
Michael, read my 6.01 pm comment above; and consider, if naturalism is so desirable why are the greens so adamantly against clothing made from skins of animals?
spangled drongo says
Sorry Jen,…[rubs knuckles]
I have some old greenie friends who are not at all fashion conscious. They do not shave or have haircuts or, I suspect, wash their clothes very often as these are required to proclaim their earthy occupations. They inhabit the forest like elves in gumboots and find it hard to to keep their drivers licenses and old vans operational. I must admit they are very interesting people and I respect them for being honest in their low consumption lifestyle.
I do prefer to keep to windward of them though.
FDB says
Jen – I take it this series is working its way around to some discussion of the Australian Greens’ policies at some point?

Jennifer,
I have to admit I’ve misunderstood these 12 posts. Its a fine joke, you’ve taken us all in. Congratulations!

FDB,
Would you like to write something about the Australian Greens – for this series? If so just email it to me.
JeremyC,
Good to know you have a sense of humour. Now what would you like discussed as part of this series? We’ve moved from politics to beliefs to fashion – what else should we cover?
Jeremy C says
Good question, you’ve got me!
Literature? Picnic menus? Perhaps literature……ummmm…. art and music…….
