Demetris Koutsoyiannis Awarded Darcy Medal

November 14, 2008 By jennifer

The 2009 Darcy Medal will be awarded to Demetris Koutsoyiannis (http://

www.itia.ntua.gr/dk) has been awarded the The Darcy Medal (http://www.egu.eu/ index.phpid=48&file=henry_darcy_overview&cHash=8b0bfba456ff76b4e3164b1dbcfb8463).

He will give the Darcy Medal lecture on Thursday, April 23 2009, at 6.30 pm at the EGU 2009 in Vienna.

The EGU statetement about the Darcy Medal reads:

Henry Darcy Medal

This medal has been established by the Division on Hydrological Sciences in recognition of the scientific achievements of Henry Darcy.

It is reserved for individuals in recognition of their outstanding scientific contributions in water resources research and water resources engineering and management.

    Hi Jennifer,

Your link is broken and I cannot find any mention of this anywhere on the EGU website. Help?

I’d like to post on this elsewhere. I am a fan of the Greek Guy (can’t spell his name lol). I am reading Benoit Mandelbrot’s The (Mis)behavior of Markets. I highly recommend it as a non-math intro to Mandelbrot’s and the Greek Guy’s ideas, especially if your are interested in the financial markets.

I guess most will know, but FYI anyway, Henry Darcy — or Darcy’s Law — is to ground water hydrology what Ohm’s law is to electricity. The two are mathematically indistinguishable.

    Best Regards,
    Joel

Hi Joel, The information was from Richard Mackey. I will send him an email asking for clarification.

    Hello Joel

I received advice of this award a few days ago because I’m on an EGU 2009 mailing list.

Although the award has been announced to a scientific community, I don’t think it has been announced to the general public, but I may be wrong.

The link I gave was to the Henry Darcy Medal info on the EGU website, not to any announcement.

    Here is a better link:

This is the egu website http://www.egu.eu go to AWARDS AND MEDALS

    Here http://www.egu.eu/awards-medals/awards-medals.html

and in the table click on EGU in a column opposite HENRY DARCY MEDAL. This lists previous receipients.

The award hasn’t been announced on the EGU 2009 website yet. But is now public knowledge in many scientific communities and probably the wider public as it is now, anyway!

A new paper of Demetris and co-workers has also just been published: “Climate, hydrology, energy, water: recognizing uncertainty and seeking sustainability”

    D. Koutsoyiannis, C. Makropoulos, A. Langousis, S. Baki, A. Efstratiadis, A. Christofides, G. Karavokiros, and N. Mamassis

    Hydrol. Earth Syst. Sci. Discuss., 5, 2927-2949, 2008 SRef-ID: 1812-2116/hessd/2008-5-2927

This feature of the peer reviewed scientific journal, Hydrological Earth System Sciences, which is, in terms of impact factor, the world’s leading hydrological scientific journal and number two in water resources is that it invites, allows, and encourages open discussion. This is, I think, something of a world first in scientific publishing.

This new paper is a very significant development as it opens up a host of broader philosophic and scientific issues about the nature of the world, the management and use of water, amongst (many) other things!
