I Heard the Bomb that Rocked Times Square, New York

March 7, 2008 By jennifer

A bomb exploded at the military recruiting centre in Times Square, New York, early this morning. I am staying at the New York Marriott Marquis in Times Square and heard the explosion. It was just before 4am and I was working at my laptop. I wondered what the very loud explosive noise was. My window on the 34th floor looks north, the bomb went off just to the south east of the hotel. I didn’t see any smoke or flames so kept working on my last blog post on the 2008 International Conference on Climate Change.

Just after 5am I dressed to go walking, it is my last day in New York and I planned to visit the site of the World Trade Centre bombing. When I exited the hotel I found myself in the middle of a crime scene.

A camera man told me someone had bombed the recruitment centre. I had planned to walk down 7th Avenue but I was directed north and so I walked across to 6th Avenue then headed south for the Financial District.

Once past the crime scene no-one seemed to know that there had just been a bombing.

I decided to detour through the West Village and wharf area and then enjoyed the view of the Hudson River.

By the time I made it to the corner of Chambers and Church Street decided I didn’t want to visit the site of a previous terrorist attack anymore. So I ducked into a diner for breakfast and then caught a cab back to the Theatre District – corner of 6th Avenue and 36th Street – where I had seen a sign in the window of a hairdressing salon saying they opened at 8am and no appointment was necessary. I knew I needed a hair cut but hadn’t had time to get one before the conference. I was at the Jean Pierre Hair Salon by 8.30am and had my hair cut and blow drier by Gilbert. As I walked back to the hotel a kind New Yorker took my photograph in front of the bomb site.

Luckily no one appears to have been hurt in the explosion.

Read about another important event in Times Square this last week but that has not attracted much media attention:

I just received an email from Lubos Motl about this with a link:

    http://www.abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=4398877&page=1

I’m glad no one was injured.

I don’t think that you’ll find that this bombing was committed by anyone who supports our troops–but by someone who merely claims to support the troops but not the mission. On the other coast, the Berkeley, California city government recently told the Marine recruiters to hit the road and called them “uninvited and unwelcome intruders.” This should make left-wingers proud.

    Jen Nice ‘do.
Don’t let the bombs fool ya. We’re mostly a nice country, with only the occasional terrorist to add spice. 😉

Yes just the odd campus massacre and drive by shooting. And didn’t McVeigh vote Republican too?

Yeah, we’ve only had the Queen St massacre, Hoddle St massacre, Port Arthur massacre, Snowtown murders, Backpacker murders, Childers Backpacker fire, etc., etc. I wonder who each of these fine Australians voted for?

Anyway, y’all come back now, ya’hear!

    “Only” is correct.

Stupid comment Luke, the US population is +14 x that of Australia so by comparison Port Arthur = 513 dead and Queen St = 117 dead.

By comparison Columbine was 14 dead (incl the 2 killers) and 28 wounded.

Yet we continue to accuse the US of gratuitous violence.

Luke, in America we have a secret ballot, so you wouldn’t know how McVeigh voted. However, eco-terrorists, the Unibomber, and people who hate our military regularly align themselves with the Democrats.

Regardless of non-comparable populations Rog and past horrendous events Proteus, we really are very fortunate in this country that we are not subjected to the almost weekly headline grabbing tragedies of countries like the US. Instead our headlines are made up of these!

I guess those who favour large-scale death and destruction, like Iraq, tend to align themselves with the Republicans.

There is no “only” when dealing with the loss of loved ones.

  10. Luke says

    March 7, 2008 at 2:29 pm

Dodgy Rog – check out the gun deaths per 100,000 and stop being such a little right wing toad. Or perhaps try the Canadian stats just for fun. I suppose you have some semi-autos buried in the back yard somewhere too.

Woody – no we checked – all Republicans thinking they were true patriots. Go Ollie North.

Anyway after a million dead the surge is now working we’re told – probably nobody left.

“Anyway after a million dead the surge is now working we’re told – probably nobody left.”

Well, Luke, no quite everyone fortunately, although Moore’s ‘minutemen’ are doing their best to achieve the final liberation of Iraq of Iraqis.

    http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/03/07/2182730.htm?section=world

This is of course an alternative to their guided munitions which employ the mentally disabled and are detonated remotely by the morally disabled ‘resistence’, sorry, Moore’s ‘minutemen’.

    http://www.smh.com.au/news/world/disabled-women-used-in-bombings/2008/02/02/1201801078388.html

I do like the euphemism the SMH uses to begin the above story, ‘militants’. I suppose they’d refer to Dr Mengele as a ‘medical researcher’.

Check out what stats Luke, you still beating that worn out beaten up Cuban drum?

Most people with any shred of self esteem gave up worshipping the image of Che Guevera.

Why do I think that all your comments are biased and compromised by prejudice?

  13. Luke says

    March 7, 2008 at 8:34 pm

Rog retreats with some diversionary smoke.

Imagine being a whale having a bomb go off in the back of your head! Or an anti-whaler having a little flash grenade go off behind your back, or a lead injection in your kevlar vest.

Are you all also glad no anti-whalers were injured under Japanese fire today? Terrorists are running amok down there!

  15. Paul Biggs says

    March 7, 2008 at 10:24 pm

Indeed – terrorism is wrong regardless of the cause.
