Tiny Budget for Heartland Institute Trying to Counter Global Climate Madness and Scientific Fraud

Heartland Institute bad – DeSmogBlog says so! ‘Did you know the Heartland Institute employs skeptics?’ ‘And it’s ‘suggested’ they get money from people who agree with them and have interests in carbon dense energy!’

The Heartland Institute is a 28-year-old national nonprofit organization with offices in Chicago, Illinois and Washington, DC. Its mission is to discover, develop, and promote free-market solutions to social and economic problems. For more information, visit http://www.heartland.org

Yesterday afternoon, two advocacy groups posted online several documents they claimed were The Heartland Institute’s 2012 budget, fundraising, and strategy plans. Some of these documents were stolen from Heartland, at least one is a fake, and some may have been altered.

The stolen documents appear to have been written by Heartland’s president for a board meeting that took place on January 17. He was traveling at the time this story broke yesterday afternoon and still has not had the opportunity to read them all to see if they were altered. Therefore, the authenticity of those documents has not been confirmed.

Since then, the documents have been widely reposted on the Internet, again with no effort to confirm their authenticity.

One document, titled “Confidential Memo: 2012 Heartland Climate Strategy,” is a total fake apparently intended to defame and discredit The Heartland Institute. It was not written by anyone associated with The Heartland Institute. It does not express Heartland’s goals, plans, or tactics. It contains several obvious and gross misstatements of fact.

We respectfully ask all activists, bloggers, and other journalists to immediately remove all of these documents and any quotations taken from them, especially the fake “climate strategy” memo and any quotations from the same, from their blogs, Web sites, and publications, and to publish retractions.

The individuals who have commented so far on these documents did not wait for Heartland to confirm or deny the authenticity of the documents. We believe their actions constitute civil and possibly criminal offenses for which we plan to pursue charges and collect payment for damages, including damages to our reputation. We ask them in particular to immediately remove these documents and all statements about them from the blogs, Web sites, and publications, and to publish retractions.

STATEMENT FROM BOB CARTER

I am a retired academic who engages in professional pro bono and paid consultancy activity from time to time, including for the Heartland Institute amongst other organisations. That said, the details of my personal finances are just that, personal and private, and I therefore have no comment to make on the stolen, and inaccurate by tampering, Heartland papers.

Because I am a professional scientist, to state or imply that I (or any other senior scientist) would accept funding that was conditional on my expressing a particular scientific viewpoint is both offensive and inaccurate, and will expose anyone who writes or says it in public to legal hazard.

Heartland documents: what’s the big deal? ‘These [skeptical] sums are loose change compared to the billions that are funneled to green groups, alarmist research establishments…”…smear blogs, propaganda organizations and the like. For alarmists to complain about such tiny sums is simply laughable’

‘With tiny budgets like $310 million, $100 million, & $95 million respectively, how can Greenpeace, Sierra Club, & NRDC *ever* hope to compete with mighty Heartland’s $6.5 million?’ — Revealed: The ‘heart of the climate denial machine’ allegedly relies on $200k per year donated from Koch to Heartland

‘How did Heartland allegedly win climate debate by buying scientists for $300k, while warmists lost it while splitting up $79 billion in US govt money?

Warmist Kelly Rigg is outraged that a ‘well-funded’ organization should dare to spend a dollar to counter every 47 dollars spent by an organization she’s run campaigns for’

Flashback: Read Climate Depot’s report on the warmist funding vs. skeptical funding — Warmists funding massive compared to paltry skeptical funding

Warmist Tobis: ‘Is Turnabout Fair Play?’ — ‘The bit about ‘dissuading teachers from teaching science’ was presumably just a sloppy edit, right?’

Heartland Institute documents leaked: ‘Documents published on Desmog blog & elsewhere, which appear to detail US think-tank’s budget and anti-climate-change strategy’

Aussie Skeptical scientist denies he is mouthpiece of US climate-skeptic think tank

‘UK Greenie George Monbiot claims it’s ‘deeply sinister’ for one dollar in private money to be used to counter $100 in public money that NASA is using to promote the climate hoax’

‘According to the most recent data on guidestar.org, Joe Romm’s Center for American Progress spends 10 times as much money as Morano’s CFACT’ — ‘And Greenpeace spends one hundred times as much money annually as Morano’s CFACT’

Warmists Declare: ‘Heartland Institute Exposed: Internal Documents Unmask Heart of Climate Denial Machine’ — Warmists giddy: ‘Stay tuned for more details as DeSmogBlog and others dig through this trove of Heartland Institute documents’

Warmist headbangers go ape over Heartland finance leak: Warmists ‘think this is some kind of equivalent to Climategate (v1 and v2), which demonstrated widespread scientific fraud, manipulation of data, destruction of emails and avoidance of FOI requests on the part of the consensus boys’

Hooray, staunch privacy advocate Andy Revkin of NYT has once again been replaced by heroic whistle-blowing Andy!!! ‘Remember during ClimateGate, when Andy was all about privacy and not sharing documents not intended for the public eye? Now that he thinks he sees a ‘confidential’ Heartland memo, he’s already tweeted about it four times in an hour’

Ah, poly popped up with the usual piffle.

Of course climategate was an inside job:

When ya can’t make it, ya gotta fake it:

And AGW extremists have inspired yet more graphic commentary:

That Bolt link is hilarious.Bolt thinks that the two-page document was the ‘main one’,which says a lot about the mans attention span. There is no information in the allegedly fake document that is not in the rest, and no attempt has been made to disown these documents. I really had to laugh when Heartland’s communication director pleaded for people not to post or comment on the material, while whining that it was unethical for people to comment on the material until Heartland had. Dumb hypocrisy.

During the heady climategate days, every time I was referred to an email by number that supposedly contained ‘damning proof’ of utter perfidy,I read it for myself. It was obvious that there was a lot of idiot projection, sheer ignorance of work practices, poor comprehension and cynical decontextualisation behind the feverish pseudo-skeptic view. A collective delusion built on the burning faith that surely this material must mean something, given its celebrity. Nothing has changed.

    Prolix poly.

“There is no information in the allegedly fake document that is not in the rest,”

    Then why forge it?

  7. Comment from: spangled drongo

So Poly, are you saying [amongst all that froth] that the doc is not a fake?

Jim Lakely, Heartlands communications director says:

One document, titled “Confidential Memo: 2012 Heartland Climate Strategy,” is a total fake apparently intended to defame and discredit The Heartland Institute. It was not written by anyone associated with The Heartland Institute. It does not express Heartland’s goals, plans, or tactics. It contains several obvious and gross misstatements of fact.

It would have been smart to verify it first.

But maybe in court the CAGWers can claim some of that “idiot projection, sheer ignorance of work practices, poor comprehension and cynical decontextualisation” etc, etc.

  8. Comment from: Robert

    “Then why forge it?”

Cohers, it’s not that they deceive well or to a purpose. They do it because its what they do.

The GetUps, or middle class Left, have reached a point where faking, fudging, spin and factoids are their comfort zone. I once knew a lawyer who was so big a liar that he wouldn’t tell you the right time when asked. He felt exposed by telling the truth, even in simple matters. I think we’re seeing this happen to an entire class.

  9. Comment from: Luke

You just have to love the comment “one of the documents is a fake”. One eh?

“Some of these documents were stolen from Heartland, at least one is a fake, and some may have been altered.”

And look at the denio-sphere squirm and froth. So much text. Must be hurting bad guys.

Having sat through the Moncky and Wattsy pensioner scaring shows you only have to listen to the audience not to be surprised. Keep ranting…

  10. Comment from: spangled drongo

I know it’s tough Luke, when you think you have the dirt on the opposition and it just turns into sand and runs through your fingers.

But don’t despair, with a bit of luck things won’t get too cool for a while and you might be able to keep a couple of balls in the air.

Meantime, I’m sure Jimmy will be able to keep adjusting the historic temps to maintain the warming trend and also maintain the disappearing heat in the Arctic.

    Luke,
Everyone now sees how the AGW promoters in the press are simply two-faced hypocrites: Downplay climategate 1 &2, and misrepresent fakegate.
Sort of like what you have done here for years: falsely accuse skeptics, and ignore the holes in your faith.
We will see how this plays out for you rent seeking lazy-ass parasites.

  12. Comment from: Schiller Thurkettle

The warmists wanted the skeptics to die out. Trouble is, they’re growing in significant numbers. The warmists wanted Nuremberg-style trials of skeptics for crimes against humanity. No trials yet, nor any sign of even one.

Next step: de-fund the skeptics. The thing is, steal-and-fakegate will likely draw even greater funding to Heartland, now that it’s obvious how meager its funding is, compared to the billion$ that pour into the warmist campaigns annually.

There will come a time when those who donated to the warmists will be tainted for colluding with them, and the warmists will be de-funded. Shortly thereafter, academic careers will be made conducting research into the sociopathy that led to the rise of global climate hysteria.

Looks like even the grapes are agin Luke!

  14. Comment from: Robert

Of course, there’s no scandal of substance. Someone broke a law childishly, faked a document pointlessly. As I said, they do these things often, but it doesn’t mean they do them well.

The scandal is in the self-loathing that is taking abundant, cheap energy and water away from humanity, even in advanced countries. A good take by one commentator on how the self-loathers succeed:
“You know, they (conservatives) want to go bowling or have a barbecue with the family or maybe get some sleep. But on the Left endless and tireless conspiracy is the staff of life. That is living. If you’re not meeting, not connecting, not watching, then you’re not alive.”
    The GetUp mentality defined.

Abundant and cheap energy and water. Not wasted, not free, but abundant and cheap. We should have a sense of wonder every time we press a switch and obtain power, heat and light without any hazard or difficulty. When we turn a tap and clean water flows out we should be flooded with gratitude. We should never take it for granted, but we should regard it all as a birthright to be extended to all others in the world. Nothing less is acceptable!

At present, we maintain our energy birthright through a wonderful natural resource called fossil fuels. In future years, something even better will be found, but what we have now is terrific enough. Don’t give up on this birthright and don’t allow anyone to use expressions like “durrrdy coal” and “carbon pollution”. Vote them down and vote them out.

There will always be priesthoods and elites seeking to dominate and subordinate through mystification. Mass consumption, a dominant middle class and general prosperity are a nightmare for these elites. Let’s keep the nightmares coming for them. Go for a drive for the pleasure and mastery of driving. Leave lights on at night so people you love don’t trip on the way to the toilet. Build more dams and burn more coal (but only in new, efficient plants).

To tell you the truth, I’m almost in agreement with Luke and Poly about the stolen docs and emails. I’ve never really cared about Climategate – the emails were confidential and the context often unclear – and I don’t care about Fakegate. The scandal is that we are begging for our birthright, and being grateful for crumbs when we should be feasting at the main table.

Cheap, abundant energy and water, now and forever!

    Spot on Hunter

Add to this the latest item over at ‘NoFrakking Consensus’

Slowly but surely the wheels are falling off the credibility of the shonkademic fraternity and their associated bag carriers.

Bring on that Commission of Inquiry into the science and its funding, evaluation, assessment, (including the role of NGO’s and their funding) in the campaign of distortion and misrepresentation

Now hush your tea party mouths and confess. Stinking insurgents and anti-scientists. You will be rooted out, tattooed and monitored.

    Licence sceptics not guns.

What have I missed? Not much it seems. But some, possibly crazy people have a strange desire to leave their mark everywhere.

  18. Comment from: Paul Homewood

Meanwhile UK Research Councils spent £234 million last year on climate research and “training”.

    http://notalotofpeopleknowthat.wordpress.com/2012/02/13/uk-universities-receive-72-million-p-a-for-climate-research/

  19. Comment from: Schiller Thurkettle

Probably the greatest frustration of the warmists is that it’s becoming clear that the billion$ they spend are increasingly pointless. Faking the facts proved ineffectual, trying to buy a public consensus with public funds is becoming counterproductive. All they have left is Lukey-style bluster, which didn’t work, even way back when.

  20. Comment from: toby

Amazing really that with so little funding the sceptics have managed to win the debate in the general population despite all those spin departments and the multi billions spent trying to prove their cause. Gives me some hope for humanity really….n’est ce pas?

says a lot about the strength of the believers arguments and “facts”!?

    Here is his mea culpa:
