Commercial Harvest
The kangaroo is an Australian national icon that attracts international tourists and Australian Governments allow the commercial harvesting of some species of kangaroos as a self-funding pest-control measure because of the negative consequences arising from the abundance of some species. Australian Governments monitor the population size of nominated kangaroo species and setting harvesting quotas as a proportion of population size.

Regulation of Commercial Harvesting
Federal and State Governments effectively regulate commercial harvesting by using various legal mechanisms to ensure that commercial harvesting is sustainable. These legal mechanisms include, kangaroo management programmes, licensing of shooters, declarations of reserves containing suitable habitat for kangaroos and the enactment of legislation implementing Australia’s international legal obligations.

Indigenous Harvests
Before European settlement of Australia, Aboriginal people managed kangaroo populations and hunted kangaroos as a source of meat and skins.

Animal Welfare
Australian Governments regulate to ensure that the shooting of kangaroos is humane by adopting the 'Code of Practice for the Humane Shooting of Kangaroos', with shooters required to comply with the Code of Practice as a condition of all licenses for the shooting of kangaroos. RSPCA Australia’s 2002 report on compliance with the Code shows that the Code is effectively ensuring the humane shooting of kangaroos by commercial shooters.

Animal Welfare Areas of Concern
While the Code of Practice for the humane killing of kangaroos is effectively regulating commercial shooting of kangaroos, RSPCA Australia's 2002 report on compliance with the code pointed to animal welfare concerns outside of commercial harvesting. These areas of concern suggest that Australian Governments still have issues to resolve in relation to animal welfare and kangaroos.

Campaigning
