Methane Leak
Scientists have discovered the Arctic ocean seabed is leaking huge amounts of methane into the atmosphere.  The research published in the journal Science shows the permafrost under the East Siberian Arctic shelf, which was thought to be a barrier sealing methane, is perforated.  Read more here. Where are the subduction zones when you need them.

The SES VVE [voluntary volcanic eruption] brigade should be formed to educate us all on what to do in earthquakes and VEs.

But seriously, we should get more serious but as we don’t live in a shaky country it’s hard to get serious.
I, [slack type that I am] have never even done a first aid course and that is much more likely to be needed.

Don’t forget to stock up on marshmallows. Seriously though, I’d been curious about that. I remember reading that the Glasshouse Mountains in Qld formed more than 20 million years ago, and didn’t know if there had been anything more recent.

Sacramento County, where I live, is a 3-hr drive from Lassen Volcanic National Park. That volcano blew its top in the early part of the 20th Century. If you want to go camping in a national park in California, and don’t enjoy crowds, Lassen would be a good choice. If you’re into touristy stuff, there are fumaroles and such that you can drive to.

    Larry,
That’s about how I understood volcanism in this NOTW to be too. The Darlington Ra. on which I live [I can see the Glasshouse Mts about 100 klm to the north] was laid down like tiers of a wedding cake compliments of Mt Warning and the last layer of basalt arrived circa 20m years ago.
I must keep Lassen in mind. I have been to California a couple of times and I love your mountains and minimalist backpacking is great. Lately I have been “backpacking” around Moreton Bay in my little wooden sailing dinghy sans motor and camping on the sand islands.

Mmm, I think Spangled Drongo is on the money – in SA we would call it the CVS – Country Volcano Service. Mt Gambier is quite close, as is Mt Schank, Mt Burr, et alia. And I’m sure Penny Wong could take this up and devise, in conjunction with Al Gore, some mitigation scheme whereby we could all contribute via taxes and credits to relieve the magma pressure.
VIM – Volcano Investment Management – financing drill holes around your favourite extinct volcano. About as effective as ETS/CRPS.
Anyway, must fly, volcano training tonight, got a pile of old tyres to burn (left over from Earth Hour) to ginger up the troops.

Spangled Drongo – so you are at Caungra?

    janama,
Near by. We overlook Canungra. Canungra is often overlooked [but should not be discounted].
