Some Nuts Can be hard to Crack

Spare a thought for this scrub turkey unable to open that nut.  I watched the bird struggle with it for quite a while at Alexandra Bay, Noosa National Park, on November 24, 2008.

If only I’d had a parang, I would have opened the nut for the turkey.

I try hard with this blog to open issues in a way accessible to everyone.

I received the following comment from a reader not so long ago:

“I have seen on your blog site where a great deal of healthy debate has raged.  This has the benefit of  not only giving all a go, but also challenges those commenting to tidy up loose ends of their argument, or cuts off invalid arguments totally.  One point that I have noticed is that the comments also help us as readers, to see similar comparisons to our own situation.  While we may not agree with a particular persons view on most points even, we are stimulated by other points that draw out ’sleeper’ issues.”

Don’t forget that as well as the main page, this blog has a ‘Community Home’ and a Donation Button.

don’t get me started on Bush Turkeys. I lived very closely with them for 5 years – the male is a total arsehole and the women are no better! just like the rest of nature I suppose. :)

From Wiki-Parang is a type of music with Caribbean and Latin American cultural influences. The word is derived from the Spanish word parranda, meaning ‘merry-making’ or ‘a group of serenaders’.

OK, Jen, Let’s dance of did you mean Parang, the Malaysian Machete

Geoff, I spent many of my formative years in Indonesia – there I learnt to open coconuts with a parang which I guess is the same as a machette or cane knife.

Jabba feels the turkey would find it less challenging whilst in repose within the confines of Jabba’s feeding tray ;-))

I would be inclined to leave the nut and open the Turkey with a machette. These things belong in the freezer, their sinuous drumsticks diced across the grain to aid digestion.

C’mon you blokes, give the turkeys a fair go. In spring

The wattled turk does all the work,
The hens say “See you later,
We’ll be back when all this tack
    Works like an incubator”.

They are great survivors and to be admired, but Jen, if you have a coconut and no parang, a suitable rock will do the trick.
You probably wont get much milk though.
